In November, the school announced the annual Blackwood Writing Competition. The winner would receive a full scholarship to a prestigious summer writing program in Paris. It was the opportunity of a lifetime, and Sarah knew she had to enter.
"Are you sure about this?" Emma asked when Sarah told her. "The competition is fierce. Some of the best writers in the school will be entering."
Sarah nodded confidently. "I have to try. This is what I've been working toward."
The competition required participants to submit a short story of at least 5,000 words. The theme this year was "Transformation." Sarah spent weeks brainstorming ideas, discarding story after story until she finally found one that resonated.
She wrote about a young girl from a small town who discovers she has the power to change people's lives through her words. It was partly autobiographical, drawing on her own experiences of leaving Willowbrook and finding her voice at Blackwood.
Sarah poured her heart into the story, writing late into the night and revising until every word felt right. When she finally submitted her entry, she felt a sense of pride regardless of the outcome.
The results were announced at a special assembly in early December. Sarah sat nervously in the audience, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
"The winner of this year's Blackwood Writing Competition," the announcer declared, "is Sarah Chen for her story 'The Word Weaver'."
The auditorium erupted in applause as Sarah made her way to the stage. She could barely see through the tears of joy streaming down her face. Michael and Emma were cheering loudly from their seats, their faces beaming with pride.
As she accepted the award, Sarah looked out at the sea of faces and felt a wave of gratitude. She thought of her mother, who had encouraged her dreams. She thought of Mr. Harrison, who had believed in her potential. She thought of Emma and Michael, who had become her family.
"This story is about finding your voice," Sarah said into the microphone, her voice trembling with emotion. "And Blackwood Academy helped me find mine. Thank you."
