Chapter 3: Diverting the Poison

With my deliberate coldness, I didn’t speak to Olivia for a couple of weeks.

Late one night, I got a tearful call from her.

“Jojo… you’re the only one who’s really good to me… Samantha… she’s trying to steal Evan! What should I do?”

Hiding the cold smile on my lips, I “comforted” her softly: “Olivia, are you maybe misunderstanding things? I don’t think Samantha is that kind of person.”

Olivia started weeping, sniffling as she recounted the “incident.” After that dinner, Evan and Samantha exchanged numbers. Not only were they chatting frequently, but Evan had even bought Samantha a Tiffany necklace as a gift.

“How do you know?”

Olivia sniffled. “Samantha ‘kindly’ warned me to be careful of Evan… I checked his phone and found their disgusting messages! I confronted Evan, he loves me so much, he got on his knees crying, said it was all Samantha coming onto him!”

I almost cursed out loud. Olivia, are you under some kind of spell? Samantha has money, looks, a bright future ahead of her—why would she go after a lowlife like Evan? She was trying to help you, and you bite the hand that feeds you?

Remembering my ultimate fate in the last life, I felt a fresh wave of cold fury. Marrying the wrong person is bad, but trusting the wrong friend is even more terrifying.

Suppressing my anger, I soothed her: “How about this, Olivia, I’ll go ask Samantha for you. I really don’t want there to be any misunderstanding between you. It’s rare缘分 (fate) that we all met and became friends.”

Olivia tried to say something else, but I’d already hung up.

In my past life, Olivia had “mediated” for me in a similar way. What a joke. What “misunderstanding” could I possibly have had with Evan?

After hanging up, I immediately sent the recording of my call with Olivia to Samantha.

I was just giving her a taste of her own medicine. Forwarding chat records (and recordings) was a trick I learned from Olivia.

“Samantha, I think Olivia might have the wrong idea about you. Maybe you two should talk?”

Half a minute later, Samantha, having listened to the recording, was furious.

“What kind of idiot is Olivia? Would I be interested in Evan? A loser who only buys fake necklaces isn’t worth a second of my time! I tried to help her, and this is how she repays me?”

I pretended to calm Samantha down while secretly fanning the flames. “Maybe Olivia just loves Evan too much. Probably sees every other woman as a rival. Ever since she got with him, I’ve been afraid to contact her.”

I could almost hear Samantha’s sneer through the screen.

“I don’t care how much she ‘loves’ him, I’m not taking this lying down!”

After graduation, Olivia had gotten a job at Samantha’s family’s company. With a helpful roommate like that, she’d avoided a lot of trouble and was doing pretty well there. Now that she’d offended Samantha, I was curious to see how she’d handle it.
