Eleanor-1 Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Awakening

1405 words

The morning sun filtered through the dusty windows of the old library, casting golden beams across rows upon rows of ancient books. Eleanor Blackwood pushed her wire-rimmed glasses up her nose and squinted at the manuscript before her. The ink had faded over centuries, but she could still make out the strange symbols that had captivated her for months.

"Another late night, Professor?" The voice startled her, and she looked up to see James, the library assistant, holding a steaming cup of coffee.

Eleanor accepted the cup gratefully. "Thank you, James. I was just... lost in thought."

James peered at the manuscript. "That's the Henderson Collection, isn't it? The one they say is cursed?"

"Cursed?" Eleanor laughed softly. "That's just superstition. Though I must admit, there are some symbols here I've never seen before. They don't match any known language."

She traced her finger over the peculiar markings. They seemed to shift and dance in the morning light, as if alive. A chill ran down her spine, though she dismissed it as fatigue.

"The university wants an exhibition by next month," James said. "Do you think you'll have it ready?"

Eleanor sighed. "I hope so. This manuscript could change everything we know about ancient civilizations. If I can just decipher these last few pages..."

Little did she know, those pages would indeed change everything—just not in the way she expected.
