Eleanor-1 Chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Journey Begins

1371 words

Eleanor could have dismissed the whispers as imagination, exhaustion, or perhaps a crack in the old building's foundation. But something told her this was real—more real than anything she had ever experienced.

Over the next week, she became obsessed with deciphering the map. Using modern imaging technology, she enhanced the faded lines and discovered it depicted a remote region in the Scottish Highlands—a place called Glen Morven.

She booked a flight to Edinburgh and rented a car, telling her colleagues she needed field research for the exhibition. The drive north was beautiful but unsettling. The hills grew wilder, the roads narrower, and the sky darker with each passing mile.

Glen Morven turned out to be a tiny hamlet, barely more than a cluster of stone cottages surrounding an ancient church. The locals regarded her with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion.

"Looking for something, are you?" asked the innkeeper, a weathered man named Alistair MacLeod, as he poured her a whisky.

"A manuscript," Eleanor replied carefully. "A very old one. It seems to point to this area."

Alistair's expression darkened. "You'd be better off leaving it be, lassie. Some things are best left undisturbed."

But Eleanor had not come this far to turn back. That night, as she lay in her narrow bed at the inn, she could hear the whispers again—louder now, more urgent.
