Chapter 11: Disappearing Act

I checked into a hotel and had the best sleep of my life. The next morning, my phone showed hundreds of missed calls and texts from Rose and Dad, all filled with venom.

I guessed they’d checked the card.

My savings were long gone, used for a down payment on an apartment. I had thoughtfully left $250 in the account as a final insult. I blocked both their numbers to avoid the noise.

Knowing Rose could show up at my office, I immediately took leave and told HR to say I’d quit if anyone asked for me. They were becoming unhinged, and in a fit of rage, Rose might just kill me again.

I spent my days in the hotel, binge-watching shows and sleeping. Rose and Dad searched for me for a week but found nothing and eventually gave up. I returned to work to earn money for my new apartment’s renovation.

The only one suffering was Mom. Too kind-hearted to abandon her daughter, she stayed. I urged her to divorce Dad over the phone.

“I’m thinking about it,” she said.
