Chapter 12: The Final Desperation

Rose’s belly grew, but she grew thinner. Ravaged by cancer, her temper worsened. She verbally and sometimes physically abused Mom during her visits.

Finally, Mom called me, sobbing. “I’ve had enough. I can’t do this anymore with your sister. Yan Yan, I’m leaving. I’m coming with you. Your father and sister are too far gone. I want a divorce.”

Dad, of course, refused. He wanted Mom around to care for his “golden ticket.” He kept urging Rose to endure, to eat, for the baby’s sake.

Rose listened. She planned to wait quietly until the birth before confronting Hunter.

But before the baby came, the news broke: Hunter and Chloe were engaged. The announcement was everywhere. My company, which had dealings with the Chow family, even received an invitation. I secretly photocopied it, ready to share the “good news” with Rose.

The moment Rose saw me, she tried to leap from her hospital bed. I quickly handed her the copy.

“Your Majesty, the Female Lead,” I said. “I’m just here to move the plot along. Don’t worry, I won’t stop your pursuit of love.”

Wary, Rose eventually took the invitation. After reading it, she tore it to shreds in a rage, then suddenly laughed.

“It’s just an engagement. He hasn’t married Chloe yet. That means he still has feelings for me.” Her laughter grew strange, unnerving. She compared herself to tragic heroines from various dramas, convinced that if she just appeared before Hunter, he would choose her.

I had only meant to mess with her, knowing her days were numbered. Dismissing her ramblings as insanity, I took Mom and left the hospital without a backward glance.

I never imagined she’d actually try to crash the wedding.
